It’s not always possible to fully control your travel schedule or decide exactly when you can take vacation to visit the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. The ideal period to experience the Amalfi Coast is from April to June.

During this time, spring flowers are in bloom, the weather is pleasantly warm, and the Mediterranean is suitable for the season’s first swims. Visiting in late spring or early summer also helps avoid the large tourist crowds in July and August and the high temperatures later in the year.

Spring is perfect for exploring charming towns such as Positano, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Conca dei Marini, Cetara, Maiori, Furore, and Vietri. It’s also a great season for hiking the Path of the Gods, taking a day trip to Naples or Sorrento, enjoying a boat tour to Capri, or walking through Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.

What to Expect from November to March

During the winter period, the Amalfi Coast becomes much quieter due to fewer visitors. Many hotels, shops, and restaurants in smaller towns close for the season, which significantly reduces accommodation choices outside Naples and Sorrento. Ferry and hydrofoil services often stop running, limiting transport options. Travel after Easter works better, since services gradually return.

In winter, the Amalfi Coast takes on a dramatic, almost mysterious atmosphere. Powerful waves crash against the cliffs, sending sprays of seawater up to the balconies of coastal homes, while the villages themselves become nearly deserted.

Although the scenery is striking, many cafés and restaurants close during this season, and rainy weather is common. For a winter visit to Italy, you might consider a less seasonal destination or base yourself in nearby Sorrento instead.

Springtime Revival from April to May

From Easter onward, the Amalfi Coast begins to wake up as temperatures rise and businesses reopen. Citrus groves bloom across the region, filling towns with fresh scents and color. Visitor numbers remain lower than in summer, which creates a calm yet vibrant setting.

Spring also marks the start of cultural life, including concerts organized by the Ravello Concert Society from April through October.

May stands out as the perfect month to explore the Amalfi Coast. Temperatures are just right, flowers are in full bloom, and the smaller crowds let you enjoy sightseeing without interruptions.

During this time, top attractions—such as Amalfi’s Duomo di Sant’Andrea, Capri’s Blue Grotto, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo in Ravello, and Fornillo Beach in Positano—can feel almost like private experiences.

Peak Season from June to August

Summer months bring the highest level of tourism to the Amalfi Coast, along with a busy calendar of festivals and events. June introduces the historic Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, while Ravello hosts a long-running arts festival from July to September.

Although prices and temperatures increase, this period offers the widest range of cultural experiences.

If you enjoy local festivals and vibrant nightlife, plan your visit for July or August. These months feature a packed schedule of concerts and events, and the Amalfi Coast attracts much of the international jet-set, who can be spotted dining in glamorous restaurants or partying in hotspots such as Music On the Rocks in Positano and Africana in Praiano.

Even during the busiest summer months, it’s possible to enjoy quiet moments along the coast. Hiring a private boat lets you explore secluded coves and beaches in a single day, while hiking the mountain trails above the coastline provides solitude far from the tourist crowds.

Comfortable Travel in September and October

Early autumn delivers another excellent window to explore the Amalfi Coast. Temperatures cool slightly after summer, making days more comfortable and evenings relaxing. Fewer domestic visitors travel during this time, yet most services remain available.

Seasonal highlights include the Festa del Pesce in Positano, where seafood, parades, and music create a festive atmosphere.

September is another excellent month to explore the Amalfi Coast. The weather remains mild, and most of the summer tourists have already left.

You can stay in Salerno or Sorrento and take day trips along the coast by Sita bus, rental car, or private driver, or choose accommodations directly on the coastline, such as a hotel or B&B.
